Heat Pump Certifications Explained: CE, ErP, Keymark, MCS, AHRI and More
Certifications are not stickers. For heat pump importers, distributors and OEM buyers, the right marks decide whether a unit can clear customs, qualify for subsidies, or even be connected to the grid. This guide breaks down the most important heat pump certifications in Europe, North America and beyond, what tests sit behind each mark, and how to verify that a manufacturer’s paperwork is real.
Why certifications gate your market entry
Every market treats heat pumps as regulated energy products. A model that ships happily to Poland can be refused in California if it lacks the correct safety or efficiency label. For B2B buyers, certifications also act as a quick filter: a factory that keeps its test reports, notified-body certificates and AHRI listings up to date is usually a factory that controls its supply chain.

European certifications
Europe remains the most certificate-intensive heat pump market. The marks below are the ones importers ask about first.
CE marking (LVD, EMC, MD)
CE is the baseline for placing a heat pump on the EU market. For a typical monobloc or split air-source unit, the relevant Directives include:
- Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) for electrical safety.
- EMC Directive (2014/30/EU) for electromagnetic compatibility.
- Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) for moving parts and guarding.
- RoHS Directive for hazardous substance limits.
Manufacturers either self-declare under LVD/EMC or work with a Notified Body. Always cross-check the body’s NANDO number and the certificate’s scope, model number and voltage variant.
ErP / Energy Label
The Energy-related Products Directive framework requires heat pumps to carry an energy efficiency label. Space heaters, water heaters and combination units each fall under different label scales. Seasonal COP (SCOP for heating) and seasonal energy efficiency ratios matter here. A well-tuned DC inverter unit will often rate one or two label classes higher than an on/off model of the same nominal capacity.
KEYMARK (subsidy access)
KEYMARK is a quality label administered by the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA). In several EU member states, KEYMARK-certified products are treated as a pre-condition for national grants and low-interest loans. Unlike a basic CE declaration, KEYMARK requires ongoing factory production control and periodic retesting, so it signals both performance and consistency.
MCS (UK BUS grants)
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is the gateway to UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grants. An MCS-certified heat pump must be matched to an MCS-certified installer and comply with MCS product standards. If your target market is the UK, asking for the MCS certificate number should be step one of supplier qualification.
North American certifications
The United States and Canada rely on a different, performance-heavy certification stack.
- UL / ETL — safety listings based on UL 1995 and equivalent CSA C22.2 standards for heating and cooling equipment.
- AHRI certification — verifies rated capacity, efficiency and sound. Air-to-water heat pumps are typically tested to AHRI 1160, while pool heat pumps fall under AHRI 1250.
- ENERGY STAR — required for many rebate programs, especially the cold-climate heat pump category in northern U.S. states.
Other markets
Beyond Europe and North America, each region adds its own layer:

Test standards behind the marks
Certificates are only as good as the standards they cite. For European space-heating heat pumps, EN 14511 defines rated capacity and COP at standard conditions, while EN 14825 measures seasonal performance (SCOP). Acoustic claims should reference EN 12102.
Across the Atlantic, AHRI 1160 uses comparable rating conditions but reports capacity and COP differently. This is why a product sheet that simply says “COP 4.5” without a standard reference is meaningless: the same unit tested to EN 14511 A7/W35 may show a different number than AHRI 47°F/45°F.
How to verify a manufacturer’s certificates
Fake or overstated certificates are common. Protect your order with these steps:
- Match model numbers exactly. A certificate for “SHAW-12EVIM” does not automatically cover “SHAW-12EVIM/B” or a 60 Hz variant.
- Check the test report issue date and standard revision. Older EN 14511:2011 reports may not satisfy current market requirements.
- Look for third-party labs. TÜV, SGS, Intertek, BV and DEKRA are widely accepted; factory-internal reports carry less weight.
- Use public directories. AHRI lists certified products online, and EU Notified Bodies are searchable in the NANDO database.
- Ask for production-control evidence. For KEYMARK, MCS and similar schemes, the certificate must remain valid through ongoing audits.
